Award: Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire - Hawg

After the founding of RFC No.42 Squadron the existing RFC training was found to be inadequate. Shortly after his transfer to the squadron, Hawg showed exceptional ability in engagements with the enemy and also a knack for instructing others. Due to his natural ability Hawg was made Training Officer within a few short weeks.

Under Hawg's instruction the squad's effectiveness grew to the point where friend and foe began to take notice of the exploits of No.42 Squadron. This exponential growth took the squad from a loose crew of individual planes to a coordinated strike force capable of anticipating enemy movements while acting together as part of a deadly machine to dispatch enemy fighters, bombers and ground targets. To accomplish this, Hawg devised a structured training program that utilized individual training as well as group exercises designed to sharpen the wits and skills of all No.42 Sqn pilots. Under his tutelage each pilot's weaknesses were identified and lessened or entirely eradicated.

In addition to his excellent performance as Training Officer, Hawg continued to instruct by example in several battles with the enemy in two campaigns. Hawg is responsible for the destruction of 20 enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat over the front during the Mini-Campaign vs JG1 and the Cambrai campaign vs JG1 and Black Haze squadrons. Hawg's ability, leadership, and total disregard of peril cannot be too highly commended.

As Commanding Officer of No.42 Squadron, it is with great honor and pride that I present Hawg with The Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
