Esteemed Squadron mates, S!

Hardware question on a new video card:

I currently run a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO (PCIe x 16), with 768 MB ram. I get any where’s between 17 – 22 FPS in game from fraps, and 40 plus out of game at menu screens.

Question is? Should I invest some coin to upgrade my current video card? Should I go for a minimum of 2 GIG ram and make it GDDR5 or will GDDR3 provide me a boost in frame rates.

Rest of PC specs:
Windows 7 32 bit
4 GIG Ram
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad, Q6700 @ 2.66GHZ
Running a Matrox Triple Head to Go digital, with 3 monitor
TrackIR5 with Pro clip

Thanks for providing any feedback, S!

The short answer is...BOTH! Find a card that is GDDR5 and 2 Gig. Go to newegg.com

It would be better if you could go to Windows 7 64Bit..I think there's an anytime upgrade.

If you upgrade then increase your RAM to at least 8 Gig...Remember 32 bit systems can only use 4 Gig and some can only see the on-board RAM minus ( - ) the Video RAM so in your current build the on-board effective RAM is: (4Gig - 768 Mb) = 3.2 Gig

Hope that helps...You may be surprised that if you go to 64 Bit and add 4 Gig of RAM how much better your Video card will do...35-42-ish

Regards,

Duff

S!

XO,

I'll have to stay with the Video Card only, as an OS upgrade isn't in the future, OH the pain of a rebuild, and program loading.....

Upgrade the video card if you have limited funds. DO NOT GET AN ATI CARD!

Is this a Dell or other retail machine or a custom build???

If you can swing $300 then get an nVidia 660 Ti, or the EVGA Superclocked model at $330 or so.

If your budget is only $200 then get an nVidia 560 EVGA is preferred.

With that old of a system, you probably can't get more than 4 gigs even with upgrading to 64 bit. Limit on board ram by manufacture.

Windows 7 64 /32bit installer OEM disk would be around $100.

You can get a budget i5 upgrade combo on Newegg for $364.96

Includes a 2400 Sandy Bridge processor
8gigs of Gskill ram
Gigabyte motherboard
1TB Barracuda SATA 3

Search "i5 combo" at Newegg

Or you could everything listed in the combo without the hard drive. I would spend the extra cash for the drive. The hard drive you have now will be a huge bottleneck.

AG-51, S!

Home built.

I ordered this card as the reviews were good on just about all the sites:

Galaxy 56NPH6HS4IXX GeForce GTX 560 GC Video Card, I have never had an ATI video card, so I was definately staying with an Nvida

My system will take more than 4 gig ram, I forget the mother board type off the top of my head.

I just can't swing the system upgrade at this time, maybe next year, I will get a new motherboard and then struggle through the OS upgrade, just to much customization on my FSX to want to fight through that at this time.

The Galaxy is good.

I spent some time looking what budget type parts would be best.

i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 1155 socket $124.99
Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H motherboard. $99.99
Patriot Gamer2 DDR3 2x4gig 8 total gigs $44.99
550 Ti $119.99

Total of $389.96 but taking off the video card price and adding Windows 7 64 bit OEM disk your at and under $400. yet for a complete boost

Here is a quick update on the video card. I made some tweaks and turned off Super Sampling and I’m getting 45+ fps. Still experimenting but very pleased with the purchase. Thanks to all.

That's great Jake. Did you use settings in Duffers post for nVidia cards? I posted the best way to upgrade or update video drivers. If you don't do it like that it is possible some old driver crap will be messing with your new card.

I am also thinking of upgrading

a few posts back cobra said this "If you can swing $300 then get an nVidia 660 Ti, or the EVGA Superclocked model at $330 or so."

does this still apply at this price and what company should i go for?

Check newegg.com on prices.

I think they're all good but....I am an EVGA guy. I have had good luck and good service from them including there TECH support when my new video card was a bit wonkie. The tech guy Chris knew just what settings to adjust and a reboot later all was much better.

Good luck,
Duff

EVGA has the best warranty. Most of the time they replace with new unit. If they no long make that unit they will give you the next upgraded class card as replacement. YOU MUST REGISTER ON THE EVGA WEBSITE WHEN YOU BUY! If not, you have no warranty.

This is the best if you can do $325.
$324. EVGA 02G-P4-3667-KR GeForce GTX 660 Ti FTW 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Look here and pick your price for around $300.

Check all of them out and pick your price, the more you can spend the better the card.

Hey CobraJ.. S!
I am working on a wishlist for 2013, it will begin with the MB so pretty much start to finsh. Lets say i have the funds for the top end build (have some side work in the pipeline Big Grin ).
If you don't mind could you fill in the blanks for me...

MB+processor>> Gigabyte motherboard ? which one?

Video>> EVGA 02G-P4-3667-KR GeForce GTX 660 Ti FTW 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
and if so why not the 3 gig ver... same price

Memory>> 8gig (more?)if so which type?

Sound?>> not sure if needed

PS>> I currently have a corsair 650watt I think it will need upgraded

currently have 2.5tb of hd space.. ok there. that is where my slow down will be but It will be good for now.
I have the OS.. win7 pro 64

I have a corsair full tower (mid-full) plenty of room.

I have done all my purchasing with NewEgg so I am comfortable with them.

If I forgot something please add it in. Thanks for all your help in advaance, no big rush here just trying to get my ducks in a row.

Rooster Salute

Here is my shopping trip at NewEgg (wish list) What would you change? If I am going to do this I want to do it right and perhaps last a few years Rolling Eyes

EVGA GTX 660 Ti will out perform a 670, Look at CUDA Cores when buying nVidia cards. 660 Ti has 1344.

Trust me 660 Ti unless something you play or use has conflicts with being in SLI. This card has 2 GPU's (Processors) which will run like an SLI configuration.

Rooster.

No AMD, yuck.

You need an SSD hard drive, everyone does. It's a bottleneck on everyone's PC.

What case do you have now and what is your budget including getting the case?

Ok.. No AMD, can you suggest one or two and we can go from there (I would like to be inside of $1000 total)
I have a new case.. Corsair 600T Graphite Series. Salute

AMD plus nVidia card = troubles
Controllers for AMD don't play well because they are designed and enhanced for ATI based video cards. Ask Flatspin how he likes ATI cards, it kept him away from this sim for a long time.

Intel/nVidia video is the best and trouble free setup.

Sandy vs Ivey
Sandy Bridge has Dual Channel Memory and Ivey Has Quad which does run better.

Can you do this plus the Corsair PSU you have listed or will it need to all be under $1000?
The SSD hard drive is a must but you can leave it out if you need to. I'm working on a Ivey Bridge 1155 pick too but Sandy is much better for gaming. Ivey Bridge has less cores that work because they have a dedicated Intel video on the CPU, Sandy 2011 doesn't.

Antec KUHLER H2O 920 is a kindof must too, cool CPU is a happy CPU. I used this one on 5 builds now, love it. You do lose 1 internal USB header though. I have a company called NZXT which has an Intern USB Expansion card Model: IU01 it costs like $15
