S!

I know, Bandwidth is really MHz. But most services base it on a charge per meg of transfer.

Memory is minimal because a server is not running the game. No video card. It is just an In/ Out machine. We run 2 cores to make sure we have the CPU power and have a bandwidth/ bit transfer rate that should accomodate 70 players. We do not believe we will design any tournaments for more than 50 players. The extra transfer rate is just to be safe.

This is a copy paste of the server description from the provider.

Location: InterNAP Chicago

Bandwidth measured by: Total GB usage

Base bandwidth: 2000 GB

Virtual CPU cores: 2

Memory size: 2048 MB

Standard hard drive size: 200 GB

We did have another provider but they would not give us full acces to all files for upload. A reflection of poor security probably. As is, Nuclear fallout gave us a full remote machine and was less expensive. It runs both the RoF server and a copy of TS server as a back up for JG1 TS and for use as a tournament TS.

Because it uses Windows server software it reboots after a Windows update. I then have to restart the RoF server and TS.

Here I go again "Back in the days of RB3D" almost any machine could be a server. I took an old HP 600mhz proccesor and used it. Colocated it at my ISP and just paid for bandwidth. Those were the days. sniff, cry

S!,

I was curious if your bandwidth, is that high, Cobraj's, on a speed test is 50 Mbps down, so if I'm seeing this correctly you have 2000 Mbps or 2,048,000 Mbps, which is WOW!!

If I read Nuclear fallout website correctly it could be 1000 to 20000 Mbps second. No wonder you have no lag or rubber banding!!!

I will be doing some more reading on this!!

The 2000 GB is max file transfer per month. (not speed)

If you want my specs I will see what they are or just get in Teamviewer and look for yourself. I'm at 50mbps down and 5mbps upload.

They are running on a commerical server? I have a web hosting server too but I'm not sure how you would run the game as far as starting it and stopping it. I can give you access to a domain if you want to buy a name some place. I can tell you DNS numbers to put in once you buy a name. I might be able to do this but you guys would have to ask Hawg if it would work and if he would manage the server space. It runs Linux os.

What is the IP of JG server?

S!

The 2 terabytes per month is a base. We pay for it whether used or not. There is a $0.05 charge for every gig over that.

There were some posts about running a server on Lynix. We went with Windows server software just for compatability.

Our IP 64.74.97.166

" I have a web hosting server too but I'm not sure how you would run the game as far as starting it and stopping it."

Are you running the actual game as a host useing the "create new server" option in Multiplay?

We use the RoF dedicated server software. We have about 10 diferent maps or missions. Each has its own dedicated_config_dogfight file. Each one is in a diferent folder on the desk top. The folder has the name of the mission. There is an ROF data folder shortcut on the desk top. I just open the mission folder I want and drag the config file and copy it to the data folder. Reboot the dedicated server control panel and the new mission is off and running. Much fater than trying to edit the config file with the new mision name.

I use RoF dedicated server software also which works very nice.

If someone wants to mess with space on my webhosting server you are welcome. I can't help you so you will have to find your own way. I would first look at what you have to do to run on a linux os webserver.

Wow, JG1 pays $40 a month for that server. I checked the link out above. Looks like a solid company.

S!

The 5 mb/s upload looks like plenty of bandwidth. With 20 to 30 people on the JG1 server we very rarely get over 1 mb/s of transfer on our upload side.

Sorry, I'm stumped.

btw , small world. My personal pc has almost identical specs. Q9650 on an Nvidia 780ii MB, 8 gig ram, Windows 7 pro 64 bit. luv it. Built it about 9 years ago with a Q6600. After RoF came out, I poped in the Q9650. Wow, whole new computer just by replacing CPU. Nice of Nvidia to make the MB future compatable. Been flying ever since.

Butzzell, are you guys renting a Virtual Server from them and you uploaded RoF to that server? I don't see where they have RoF as a choice of games they have preinstalled for rent.

Cobraj,

If you are referring to this:

!!! ERROR INET thread: MIS_REQUEST_FAILED: MIST_SERVERNOTIFYPROXY
!!! ERROR INET thread: MIS_REQUEST_FAILED: MIST_KEEPALIVESERVER
RCON: Disconnected [0]: 192.168.0.3: 49215
RCON: New incoming connection [0]: 192.168.0.3: 51026

I searched for this error and just about all said:

From RoF Forum: ...I believe it's when you drop packets between the master server. It happens on occasion, so I've learned to ignore them. If you get a lot of them then it could be a problem with the master server or your internet connection...

So if this was what you were pointing out, I wouldn't worry about it for now.

If it was something entriely different, please point me to the log you made reference to.

Salute

S!

Yes, we rent a vitrual server. I thought it was strange they did not list RoF on their site. There are a couple of other squads useing them as well. Jasta 5 recomended them to us. RoF is probably such a low request that it is not worth their bother. The virtual server is almost half the price of their dedicated game servers.

I am happy with our present configuration. It runs very smooth with 40 players. We were thinking we might eventually try for 50.

I followed the directions for a dedicated server. Downloaded and upgraded the demo. Much quicker than trying to upload RoF from my home pc. Created a new RoF login. Diferent email and pw than my personal account. Set up the start up and server config files and all was good. Very suprized that it worked without any trouble.

To upload new missions all I do is open the mission / dogfight folder shortcut on the desktop of the remote machine. Then I open the mission / Dogfight folder short cut on my personal desk top. Copy the files I want to transfer and paste them into the file on the remote machine.

That sounds like my install here, pretty simple. Do you run the update for RoF and you see the Update Console appear?

You have TeamSpeak running on this server also? Is that hard to setup?

Thanks. I'm now considering buying this type of server to run TeamSpeak, RoF, and maybe saving some money.

S!

Yes, After every RoF update, you have to update the game. As always, it installs Direct X. And then you have to go into that start up file and change it to the higher bandwidth. Every time, did I mention every time. It is really not that big a bother. I have the corected file saved and just copy paste it in. You just have to do it every time.

Sorry to rant. I figure if you fix it once, it should stay fixed.

The only time you start RoF is to use the updater and then quit. The server never runs the game.

TS was pretty easy to set up. No problem running both.

To be clear, they let you install TeamSpeak3 Server binaries so you have no additional costs for a TeamSpeak server, it all run on virtual server?

Thx again.

You rent the server. You can run anything.

No problem with 40 people on RoF and on the TS the server is running all at the same time.
