For meritorious service while assigned to Red Flight in RFC No.42 Squadron during the Flanders in Flames XVIII Defense of Britain, Rooster did support squad operations by the following citation:

While in combat operations against the enemy, Rooster's skill as a flight leader was demonstrated many times in his ability to place himself and his flight directly in the path of the enemy forcing them to engage the scouts of Red Flight instead of the more vulnerable 2-seaters and multiple-engine aircraft they were charged with escorting. During these successful engagements Rooster shot down 2 enemy planes and damaged countless others forcing them to disengage and run for home, failing their missions. His performance of duty reflects great credit upon himself, No.42 Squadron and the British Empire.

As the Commanding Officer of the No.42_Squadron, I commend you for your efforts and in recognition from a sincerely grateful command staff and the pilots of the No.42_Squadron award you the Distinguished Flying Cross.
