AAR on the D7 kill.
DooRight and myself were in N11s just east of Verdun. We met 4 Albs below and engaged. At least 1 Halb soon joined. After a bit we had a Spad helping out.
BTW albs were not DII early. One was smoking from a closed radiator.
I was keeping my alt, generally in a right hand turn, only taking shots at the highest Albs and climbing between shots.
(As well as looking around at the target rich environment. Also I had told DooRight to keep alt and only attack the highest enemies. That worked until the D7 showed up.)
I was shooting at one of the albs when tracers came past and I was bloodied. I looked around and saw the rapidly shrinking silhouette of a D7 zooming up. He must have bounced me from a really high Alt.
I couldn't do anything about him so I just kept an eye on him and took another couple of passes at Albs/Halbs? His next pass at me was more level so he didn't zoom up as before. We made several more level passes before he took interest in somebody close to the deck. This had dragged me down into the fight. He was too far down to follow at the time. A little fuzzy on the details but I think I made a couple of passes with other aircraft and then he was back up to my alt trading a couple of passes with me. Then he went back down again. I was lower this time and still a bit too high to effectively follow. But nobody seemed to be focused on me so I went down after him. Took a long distant shot, but got his attention. With alt on him I managed a couple of BnZs but before long we were fighting on the deck. From my point of view, at this time, there was an even chance of winning this fight.
We had another head on pass. I was a little higher so I passed above. We both turned right causing our wingtips to clip, and we both went down.
It wasn't a clean victory, but it wasn't a dumb luck kill either.
