Interview with Jason about Ilya muromets

I wish they would have integrated it with RoF. As a stand alone it seems a bit limited :(

I guess I forgot to say anything about this, VMan and I were talking about this sim a couple of months ago.  Rumors say that it is a stand alone product because it was primarily funded by and developed for the Russian Military Historical Society.   The only thing new is the map and one big, slow airplane.  All aircraft other than the Muromets are ported over from RoF, the current list is:

Russian empire
♦ Nieuport 17.C1 (fighter)
♦ Nieuport 11.C1 (fighter)
♦ SPAD 7.C1 (fighter, 1917 )
♦ “ILya Muromets” (bomber)

The enemy:
♦ Roland CIIa (recon)
♦ Albatros D.II (fighter)
♦ Albatros D.III (fighter)
♦ DFW C.V (recon)

The best thing about this sim is there would be a place to fly without having bionic Dr1's filling the sky.  
The worst thing would be all the Germans whining about no Dr1's.
In that respect I prefer for it to stay stand alone.

Q: Why is this separate product and not part of ROF proper? Many users have expressed interest having an Eastern Front add-on for ROF. Why do they need to purchase something separate which can easily be added to ROF’s existing store and architecture?

A: This product is funded by the Russian WWI Historical Society and it makes sense to market such a product independently without requiring users to download and install a separate product not necessarily focusing on the Ilya Muromets which is the star of this product. Additionally, this product will include a new control scheme that would require a huge re-write of existing code for all planes in ROF since special work is needed to allow our planes to fly with a mouse, but still adhere to our engine’s realistic attributes. Adding that functionality to all ROF planes is expensive and time consuming. It would also no doubt be controversial for existing users who fly with traditional flight-controls. Ilya Morumets allows us to create this new control option without upsetting current ROF gameplay norms. It also allows us to utilize our experience gained making and selling BOS to better attract interested retailers and new customers.

I was a bit negative about this when I read about it, but Jason's description of the tie in to the historical society is actually a very cool idea. In the interview it rings pretty true. It would even truer if they sell it at a reasonable price.

You think then porting the planes or rather "plane" and the map to RoF would be fairly simple?  no?

Technically yes, legally no. The sim is apparently based on the exact same physics and graphics engines as RoF. The mouse control option would need to be removed from the Muromets since that probably involves adding a coordinated rudder feature the average RoF user would call a cheat. The map I would think would be an easy addon for RoF. The elephant in the room is the Russian Military Historical Society owns the rights to the map and the Muromets since they paid to have them built so a licensing and royalty agreement would be needed. Worth the trouble? Who knows.
