| Can anyone recommend good sites to purchase motherboards, cpu's and memory, as well as Windows 7? I live in Canada so maybe Canadian sites to avoid duties, etc. Also, any component recommendations also welcome. Budget is tight, so what I'm looking at is probably an Intel I5 processor and a decent motherboard to put it on. I have the rest, but will require memory upgrade and OS. Thanks. | |

| Cheaper Windows 7 - Buy a OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) You can only install it on one Motherboard and CPU but you can re-install as many times as you need on that MoBo and CPU.
RAM - 16 Gig is nice but really, anything over 8 Gig is a bit of overkill. Again, the new SSD Hard drives are kickA$$ and a really good upgrade.

| Thanks guys. I was just looking at Newegg. Considering an I5-3570 or an I5-4670. They are about the same price. Can anyone help me here? I really am ignorant when it comes to this stuff.
- Duff ... not sure what you mean by OEM. Do you buy the software with the components?

I have a laptop with windows 8, just curious about why you say this? SS Speaking for myself, I just don't like what the did with the UI in Win8. I am sure its solid and most of the 7 drivers work on 8. Windows 7 will just be more familiar for someone migrating from XP or anyone that doesn't want the hassle of learning the ins and outs of a new WinOS. The way its looking I think most folks will probably just skip it and wait for 9. Lexx here is a writeup comparing those 2 procs http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-4670-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3570Tiger Direct sometimes has better deals than NewEgg and its worth a look.

| S!
Decided to dumb down my upgrade. I ended up moving all my components to a bigger box(which I had). Then I bought a SS Drive and Windows 7. Added two more Gigs of ram(which I had) for a total of six. Everything went smoothly! I'm very pleased with the results. I'm sure there are a few tweaks to come, but only minor ones, I hope. See you all tonight!

I have a laptop with windows 8, just curious about why you say this? Sorry didn't see this. The interface of windows 8 is foreign at the moment. It is really meant for a touch-screen. As you probably know SS it's about half and half touch screen and mouse. It is a hybrid. It's just easier for a gamer to stay with the tried and true rather than experimenting with the new. The last time I looked Windows 7 and 8 were the same price. Makes ya wonder why, no? Now for someone like yourself, SS, that enjoys the nuances of computing I'll bet you're having fun with 8. I presume your laptop is touch-screen. Also FWIW I have access to and use a Surface Tablet with 8.1. It's fine but I do not find it any better than Windows 7 Pro.

| Actually no it's not a touch screen, but that it's intended for use with touch screens explains a lot. I've found it to be a handy format to use though and since I was coming from XP with only a brief, negative and not by choice, experience with Vista, I expected to have to relearn my way around. The transition wasn't that bad. I like the tile screen and using those other what-ya-madidles and lack a frame of reference on Widows 7. That said, if the Laptop hadn't come with it, I would not have bought Widows 8 just as a matter of principal because I always wait until an OS has been out over a year, preferably longer, before I have anything to do with it. The best reason for going with windows 7 is what Hawg pointed out about the drivers for hardware are better because the writers understand Win 7 better. Hay, interested in a Win 98 disk? | |
