I recently lost my cattle dog and I was wondering if anyone here knows a thing or two what to look for in a good working dog? Australian in particular
and no this is not a joke so please keep the silly stuff to yourself

Sorry to hear about your loss. Perhaps some of these websites would be good resources on your search.

Yeah, sorry for your loss. I've known a couple Blue Healers in my life, they are wonderful dogs.

My "Aussie" is an Australian Shepherd which you probably know is just Australian in name only. He is an absolutely wonderful dog, companion and comes from a long heritage of working dogs. Smart as a whip, he learns new tricks in two or three repetitions...then he retrains us. He's very active, needing almost constant task or he gets bored, then he starts looking for trouble. They say Aussies need a job: I would add - they need to do it often and for a long time! A tired Aussie is a good Aussie!

The breeder we got him from is in Southern Michigan and she has dogs all over N. America. She will not ship them, so you need to pick the dog up. I'll attach her website. She is exhaustive in her knowledge and really strives to make the breed better. She hails from 20 yrs working with wolves, then started raising Huskies and Aussies. Anyway...give them a look - I've had a number of breeds of dogs in my life, this one is really a joy to have.

interesting links redbravo thanks

I talked to one breeder and she said make sure the dog has a wide snout especially for a working dog.
she said they are smarter.I don't know if that makes any sense at all.
I have had two Australian shepherds ,the first one had a wide nose and the second a narrow nose.the first one was a much superior dog so i am going to have a look at that ladies web site flatspin ..thanks again

We have German Shorthair Pointers. Great dogs, but not if you live in an apartment or have little energy for them.

If you end up talking to her, her name is Jill and we are Tim and Denise in Grand Rapids, MI. We took Kodi (her Noel).

flatspin I sent her an email and she replied right away that was impressive .
she had some great advice and I just bought a pup from a breeder up here thanks to her advice I was able to ask some pertinent questions

I saw she has something to do with so called wolf dogs so I sent another e-mail as I have a problem with what I think is a wolf dog pair, well I had a problem as I have destroyed the den but missed the adults ,still waiting for a reply from her on that

From what I understand, she worked with wolves, not wolf-dogs, but I may be wrong. Wolf/dog pairings are dangerous "dogs", I don't blame you.

I carry a rifle on my ATV at all times just in case I see them.
some visitors from New Zealand were here for a few days and the guy was amazed I was allowed to do that ,their cops can't even carry one,he had to take a few pictures to show his friends back home,of course I just had to play the cowboy but I couldn't get him to fire it.
