Made 'sticky' on 9/16/2012 - by Duff4r

Pilots of the No.42_Squadron,

This is a tutorial for setting up Teamspeak 3 Whisper channels.

We need Whispers setup when we're sided and flighted, i.e. Entente - Red, Green, Yellow

Below is a Step-by-step and pictorial on how to do this. Specifically I show you how to set up Entente, Red Flight channel.

It is not a daunting task!

XO

Let's get started!

A.) Open TeamSpeak and connect to No.42 Squadron Server.

B.) Click on Settings, Options and select the 'Whisper' Tab on the left.

C.) Click on Whisper List button.

Step 1.) Click on the 'New' button

Step 2.) A prompt will popup asking you to assign a Hotkey of YOUR choice..do so by pressing your chosen 'Hotkey' on your keyboard.
Note: You can change this by cliking the 'Hotkey' button on the GUI top center and pressing your new 'Hotkey' on the keyboard.

Step 3.) On the right hand side, Expand No.42 Squadron

Step 4.) Under No.42 Squadron, Expand the Channels

Step 5.) Using your mouse drag a channel i.e. (Rise of Flight/Briefing Lobby/Entente/Red Flight) from the right side to the left side.

Step 6.) Click 'Apply'

Step 7.) Click 'OK'

ATTENTION! The above will be repeated, using a different Hotkey for the Blue, Green and Yellow Whispers
.

NOTE! Channels can be edited by simply dragging them back and forth from right to left and left to right. Apply and OK and your done!

Ok here's a question. Shouldn't these whispers only be set up by the flight leads and the whisper should only go to the other respective flight leads? I thought the whole point was that it was a higher level of communication between flight leads to coordinate and thereby eliminate needless chatter. Why don't the flight leads just set this up and then disseminate any information they get from these whispers to their flights as they see fit?

The problem with that occurs when the flight lead is shot down and goes for a smoke, or logs for the day; can't make it that night; loses Internet...then we've lost communication with the flight completely. This way anybody will be able to step up and be the flight talker if necessary — the buttons will already be in place.

So in a hypothetical flight, if you as flight lead of X Flight wants to communicate with Y Flight and tell them some message, are you going to send a whisper to all of Flight Y or are you going to have a whisper set up to Y flight's lead? If you just want to know location or something along those lines, it would be cleaner for that message to only go to the flight lead so he could respond without anyone in Y Flight being interrupted.

Just a thought, and maybe this would be hard to have set up.

No different really, but if that other lead is the one being replaced your whisper to him is not going to work for the other guy.

It's only different in the sense that you will avoid one way conversations from the standpoint of a regular pilot in one flight.

For instance,

X Flight Lead whisper to Y Flight: "Whats your position?"
Y Flight lead whisper to X flight: "2 miles east of blah blah blah"

In this case the regular pilots of both flights get fragmented messages that they don't know are whispers from another flight.

The pilots in X flight in particular would hear "2 miles east of blah blah blah blah" and they'd go wait where? what?

Maybe this just can't be avoided but if there were some way to maybe have a user be in two channels at once in TS and have each current flight lead in a "X flight lead" channel and also the "X flight" channel as an example, it might make it cleaner because you could set up your whispers to only go to the "lead" channels for each flight.

When you set up your whisper to Red flight, you add Yellow (or whatrever) to that same whisper so both flights hear you talking. You can add multiple flights to one whisper, so you are tlking to your flight and the other at the same time.

What you then have is:

X Flight Lead whisper to X and Y Flights: "Y flight, (this is) X flight, location?"
Y Flight lead whisper to X and Y Flights: "X flight, Y flight is 2 miles east of blah blah blah"

If you have the whisper set up to a pilot that is not there, no one will hear that whisper unless you change it to whoever does happen to be in that position on that day, each time.

PostSubject: Re: Teamspeak Whisper Channel Setups   Teamspeak Whisper Channel Setups EmptyTue Sep 18, 2012 5:08 pm

Not to confuse....

The simplest way is to have the Whispers setup as above..If you want your flight to hear it too just press both the Whisper key and your Push-to-talk key at the same time. I did it last night and it worked, very slick.

Clarification:
I'm the FL of Red flight. I want to whisper to Yellow Flight and have my red flight hear it too. Press your normal PTT and the whisper to yellow flight key and speak!

Try it!

Ok, I'm not trying to argue with you or something but what about this example:

You get everything set up just like you laid out above but then you switch flights. You were in X Flight now you're in Z flight. You have to go in and change your whispers so that your "Y Flight whisper" now transmits to Y Flight and Z flight in stead of Y Flight and X flight otherwise you have the same problem I talked about above.

I also never said that we'd have to set up whispers to individual people but if we had a Red Flight Lead channel and a Yellow Flight Lead channel, etc. then we could set up our whispers so that they just go to that one channel and whoever is the current flight lead just has to make sure they're in that channel as well as the normal channel. This is possible because you can be in two rooms at the same time.

The only downside to this in my opinion is that if the flight lead were to get shot down and you became flight leader you would have to switch your teamspeak channel on the fly but that's better than having to setup your whispers everytime you switch to a different flight.

PostSubject: Re: Teamspeak Whisper Channel Setups   Teamspeak Whisper Channel Setups EmptyTue Sep 18, 2012 5:21 pm

Ok I'm really sorry but I just have one more idea.

If we setup a "Flight Leads" channel then every flight lead joins that channel as well as their own channel for the flight their leading. All everybody has to do is setup one whispers to the "Flight Leads" channel and then the flight leads can communicate on their own without any possibility of confusion because no one else hears the chatter. If a flight lead gets shot down, new flight lead jumps in the flight leads channel or at least can have one way communication with the flight leads channel if nothing else.

Just a thought don't shoot me!

If FL gets shot down the way it's illustrated above, nobody has to jump into any other seat, they are already wired to talk.

Please bear in mind: this whisper set is minimum requirement, you can have as many other whispers as you like.
